Geography

Haripur is located at 25.8083° N 88.1417° E . It has 19559 units of house hold and total area 201.06 km²


Haripur is in the northwest corner of Bangladesh. It is about 500Km far away from Capital of Bangladesh. It is surrounded by Ranisankail upazila by its east, Bliadangi by its north and India by its south,west and some parts of north sides. This is a Himalayan plane land.



Demographics

As of 1991 Bangladesh : Haripur has a population of 101658. Males constitute are 50.93% of the population, and females 49.07%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 49922. Haripur has an average literacy rate of 19.5% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.

History

During British rule Haripur was under the jaminder Hariprasad sing under the tehsil of Thakurgaon.Later Haripur became a thana of Thakurgaon subdivision of the undivided Dinajpur District. In 1947 at the time of the Partition of India, Thakurgaon Subdivision became part of East Pakistan and became part of the of newly established Dinajpur District of East Bengal. In 1984 Haripur become a upazila and Takurgaon subdivision became a separate district.



Economy

The economy of Haripur upazila can be divided into two major parts: Agri-based economy and non agricultural sources of economy. It is an obvious that in agri-depended Bangladesh agriculture would be the thrust sector of the economy. Haripur has been striving for long time to be economically productive. But being 500 km apart from the capital it is not easy to get sufficient technical and logistic support. Even its been always a pain for local products to get into the national market. It is not easy for the investors to set up their business far away from the center of national trade and commerce. Haripur is rich in producing a good number of agri-items like paddy, wheat, sugercane, seasonal corps, seasonal fruits etc.Potato and Mango become the main production of agriculture . These become the main livelihood of the native. Poltry firms are quite productive business in Haripur.. Different businesses for producing and repairing agricultural tools have grown up. Good number of service holders doing well in Haripur engaging themselves in different government and non-government services among with independent jobs. The people needs some planned and long term actions to develop and maintain their economy.

Culture

Haripur is culturally very rich upazila. It has its own culture developed for many years. The locality face an influence of its colorful culture. Few festivals and cultural events are regularly arranged here. 'Boishakhi Mela' are arranged every Bangla new year. . Dhamer Gaan is the cultural invention of Haripur people. Existing Saountal trible enjoy their culture practices. There are some cultural groups ,like “Haripur cultural group”,”Chowrangi cultural group”etc.

Organizations

Many government and non-government organizations are active in Haripur. Government offices and organizations are as usual to any upazila of Bangladesh. Along with some famous national NGOs like BRAC, ESDO, ASA, CARE, Grameen Bank,RDRS there are number of renowned local non-government organizations active here.
